THE FIRST 5 QUESTIONS WHEN PLANNING A BIRTHDAY PARTY

QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED BEFORE PLANNING A BIRTHDAY PARTY

Today, it's going to be short but important to everyone especially event planners.

I thought about what to write yesterday to keep up with my Monday posting, I couldn't figure out what advice to give my readers till 1 am. To be a blogger is not an easy job, I therefore commend my colleagues.

I got a call last night about a birthday party to plan, after the discussion with the parent, I got the topic for my blog today. I asked myself the most important things that should not be forgotten or rather the first questions to be asked when planning a birthday party for a child.

The first 5 questions:

FOR EVENT PLANNERS
  1. The celebrant's age.
  2. The celebrant's sex.
  3. The celebrant's date of birth.
  4. The location/venue.
  5. The budget.

FOR PARENTS
  1. Pick a date.
  2. Plan the budget.
  3. The guests (make a list).
  4. The venue.
  5. Decide a theme (if you want one)

IS THE FLOORING RIGHT?

FLOORING FOR A CHILD’S ROOM

I have given us clues on how best to arrange, design and make choices as regards to that little ones rooms so this time we talk about the floors which is an essential part of the whole process.
The type of flooring that you choose for a child’s bedroom is going to have an effect on the entire environment. This means that you have to focus on a variety of characteristics when weighing your options. The quality of the floor, as well as its look, feel, and texture will all affect how the child is able to interact with the room. You also have to be concerned about the possibility of certain floors causing an odor, or harming the air quality of the space with various emissions.
There are several options but whichever you choose make sure safety is the first thing you think of. You can either choose a carpet, rubber, rug bamboo, vinyl, cork. Floors take a lot of abuse, especially when under the domain of your average toddling disaster zone. Of course, you want your little rug roller to be safe and comfortable while playing on the floor, but as any mother of the typical 1 to 2-year-old like myself will tell you, their feet takes its toll - and if your flooring isn’t strong enough to stand up to rowdy selves and leaky Sippy Cups, that toll could end up costing you a small fortune.
Before purchasing new flooring for your nursery or kid’s room, take a minute to consider your needs and weigh all your options. Dreaming on a budget? Get the look you love for a fraction of the cost with laminate or linoleum. Concerned about the environment? Bamboo or cork may be the best choice for you. Not sure yet? Don’t worry! Learn the benefits and drawbacks of the most popular nursery flooring options right here.
RUG
Soft, comfortable and forgiving, rugs can protect your wobbly baby from bumps and bruises, making it seem like the obvious choice for your new nursery. But before you buy, beware. Wall-to-wall rugging is difficult to clean and can quickly become a haven for dust mites, mold and mildew - less than ideal for those suffering from allergies or asthma. What’s more, new rugs, especially those made of synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester, often contain volatile organic compounds and other toxic chemicals that could make your little one sick.

If you can’t imagine your nursery without cushy, comfy rugging, you're not alone. Many people prefer rugs, and there’s nothing wrong with that. To ensure a healthy start for your little one, look for rugs made from natural, volatile organic compounds -free materials such a wool, cotton, sisal or jute, which will prevent your child from exposure to most if not all of the chemicals found in cheaper, synthetic carpeting. If natural-fibre rugs are a little out of your reach, opt for others which costs less than natural fiber alternatives. Whatever you choose, be sure to install your carpet well ahead of baby’s arrival, giving it plenty of time to air out.

With children’s design products, everything, including rugs for kids, are designed as an opportunity for a game or activity. Temporarily convert the floor-space in the playroom into a game arena. You can take the idea of an activity rug one step further with educational rugs. Playfully and seamlessly they introduce learning into your kids bedroom or playroom through puzzles, maps, and vocabulary. A kids rug can also just be a great way to introduce fun and whimsical colors and patterns into a bedroom or nursery. It is always a wise idea to invest in sensible and classic furniture pieces that you plan on having in the kids room for many years to come. Use rugs as an opportunity to really express your children’s ages and interests — whether it’s through a neon floral rug or bold superhero print rug. For nurseries, bold colors and shapes can provide comfort for the baby. Picking out a bedroom or playroom rug pattern is an activity that kids can get excited about and involved with in the process of decorating their rooms.

WOOD
Long lasting and easy to keep clean, hardwood floors have a classic look that never goes out of style. Although fairly durable, all wood floors are subject to wear and tear, especially under the abuse of rambunctious kiddos, and some may scratch or dent easily depending on the finish - something to think about given their expense. Depending on the type of wood and selected finish, cost per sqm of flooring can be expensive. You should also plan on purchasing a large area rug to protect your investment and provide a more comfortable playing surface to soften your baby’s falls.
You can find them in most of the condos in certain part of ikoyi and Lekki.

BAMBOO
Popular with the eco-friendly crowd, Bamboo provides a strong, durable and considerably less-expensive alternative to hardwood. In fact, bamboo may be one of the cheapest green flooring options available.
Bamboo is the ideal renewable resource, taking only 5-7 years to reach maturity. Naturally pest resistant, it requires no dangerous pesticides, ensuring a completely organic product. It is also remarkably versatile. Bamboo fibers can be spun into the softest of cloth, yet as a flooring material, it is harder, more scratch resistant and less prone to warping than hardwood - In other words, it can take anything your toddler can dish out. What’s more, bamboo flooring can range dramatically in look and color depending on how the material is processed, making it a good fit for any room.

CORK
Naturally anti-allergenic and antimicrobial, cork is another excellent choice for kids’ rooms. Warmer and softer than wood flooring, cork provides a comfortable, safe play surface for your little one, cushioning their falls and eventually their footsteps - a feature you’ll appreciate more and more as your little one grows.
Like bamboo, cork is a great choice for parents looking for eco-friendly flooring solutions. Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. The bark, which is harvested without harming the tree, takes only 3 to 4 years to grow back, making the practice highly sustainable.
If you’ve never seen a cork floor before, you may be wondering how this soft, spongy material could ever take on a toddler, but cork is a great deal more durable than you’d think. While cork is more susceptible to scuffing than harder materials like bamboo, it is actually quite resilient, lasting as long as 15 years. Many house builders use them in Nigeria recently especially in Lekki and Ikoyi areas.

LAMINATED FLOORS
Laminates offer an inexpensive, easy-to-install alternative to hardwood flooring or tile. Fairly durable, scratch-resistant and easy to clean, laminates are not a bad choice for a nursery or playroom, provided parents opt for newly available low or zero-emission laminate products.

Made from pressed fiber or wood particles and typically treated with formaldehyde and other chemical toxins, most laminate products produce dangerous fumes and should be avoided. If you can’t find low or zero emission laminate products, you might consider natural linoleum flooring instead. Organic, sustainable and biodegradable, the components of natural linoleum are both eco-friendly and volatile organic compounds free.

WHO ANCHORS YOUR CHILD'S EVENT?

HOW TO ACT AT A CHILD'S PARTY

How do we act when around children? Are there certain ways to act around children of various ages? what should our language be? Is our dressing right? These are the questions I asked myself after a just concluded children’s event. Some people acted in manner I asked myself if they were suitable to be around children.

My daughter’s birth, her growth, my business presentations and events, I’ve come to realize that there are certain ways people should act and dress either as a teacher, MC or an event planner. Aside their homes and immediate family, the people children meet outside should be role models to them because they tend to pick whatever they see and hear. So we should be careful how we act, talk, dress, walk around children. When you are at a party with multiple generations of guests, playing games is a way to connect individuals and create memories. There is something unforgettable about playing certain party games with children. Some party games will give you the opportunity to laugh out loud, burn off some extra energy and make the next party your best ever.

Understand that parents take pride in how they raise their kids, so as an event planner for children, you should know how to organize the event in such as way that it will be playful, educative, colorful and fun.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF AN ANCHOR AT A CHILD’S EVENTS
  • Try as much as possible to get down to the children’s level with the choice of words for the games and activities.
  • Play music children loves and also the ones that have good and sensible meanings.
  • Treat them like they are mature obviously without talking about mature topics or using big words.
  • Be polite under every circumstance. This should be a common knowledge when your work is all about children.
  • Think about how parents will interpret your actions, statements and answers.
  • Use the appropriate tone and language when handling the event.
  • Walk properly and not over the place.
  • Sit normally and still. Sit up straight and cross your legs at the ankle if you are a female.
  • Wear better quality clothes or business attire suitable for playful events. This includes clothes that are more conservative. Short skirts, tube tops and spaghetti strap shirts are not business attire for women.
  • Make sure you don't lose your cool in an argument or a conversation because the kids are watching.
  • Being around children can be stressful most times but try to stay cool in such situations. Sure some adults flip out under stress. Don't be one of those people. Try not to stress and worry if something bothers you, but try to deal with it at the same time.
  • Please and please do not play favoritism during these events because the children will feel bad. You did well to invite them to the party, so you should give all the same needed attention. However you treat a child, they will never forget it and will tell all they see and the worse, they will be scared to come around you again.

As an event planner and a parent, please make sure the MC of the party is kid’s friendly, amiable, courteous, funny, intelligent, dresses well, has a track record of making children laugh hard. His/her English has to be impeccable, we do not our kids speaking the wrong English. Thanks.

HOW TO DRESS FOR A KID'S PARTY: MOTHER AND CHILD

WHAT TO WEAR

Whatever the age, birthday parties are always a fun celebration, so make sure you dress right for the event. It can be a costume, princess dress-up, casual, or fancy, knowing how to dress your child for a birthday party can seem a little overwhelming. Use this guide to help navigate through the process, and your kids will always show up at the party in just the right attire.

Start with the basics: pull out the invitation and read the clues given there if there's one, if not, do not worry, Meggie and Angels have got you covered. Where will the event take place and what time of day? These two questions will determined the weather factors when choosing an outfit. Next, look to see whether there will be a theme. A princess or mickey dress-up will make it clear that costumes are needed. In the case of a dress-up party be sure to have your child bring an extra change of clothes.

Casual Attire
An outdoor party would definitely require casual attire. Be sure to dress your child appropriately, and bring an extra outfit for accidents up until age 5. Keep in mind that girls should always wear bike shorts under their cute dresses to ensure modesty when play gets more rambunctious. For casual parties it is always fun to dress children with the theme, even if it is not required. If your son is going to a "Ben10" party or your daughter to a "Dora" party, it is simple to find a shirt to go along with that theme. Avoid restrictive clothing at all parties, as the child is more likely to get fussy and aggravated if uncomfortable.

Fancy Dress
Boys and girls will sometimes be invited to kids' parties that require more formal attire. A girl's party themed or not should be approached very differently. While you should still consider comfort, it is also important to look nice. With active kids this may seem difficult, but as long as your child shows up at the party looking put together, that is half the battle. Boys should wear clean, unwrinkled clothes, preferably collared shirts. Young girls should wear a nice dress with close-toed shoes and matching accessories if you have them. Little girls need to have their hair neatly done, preferably in a braid, pony-tail or pulled-back style.

Kids' birthday parties can be fun events, and as a parent it is best to bring your child prepared for the fun. Not only does it relieve parental anxiety, it also helps your child feel comfortable . Along with appropriate attire it is important to bring along some essentials. No matter the age of your child, cleaning wipes, diapers, and a brush should always be handy.

0-6 years
For clothes, it's always good to have them put on a short dress that's cute, sweet and easy to move around in.
For hair, have braids if hair is long enough. If short or no hair yet, don't do anything with it. Maybe put in a cute head band. At these parties there are lots of games so try to keep hair out of your child's eyes.

7-10 years
For clothes, wear pants with a pretty shirt and maybe add a cardigan if the weather is cold. There are still games at some of these parties so jeans are not recommended.
For hair have in a ponytail, braid or pulled back with a cute headband.

11-14 years
These parties are more casual. Its okay to wear your skinny jeans due to the lack of games.
For hair, wear a pony-tail, braid or bunny.

For Mummy
A peplum top will conceal your tummy and colored jeans come equipped with ample stretch. Stay mobile with flat sandals, and add fun elements like a neon accented necklace and ring (if jeans are too hot). Slip on a white blazer in case you get chilly inside.

Wear a pair of premium jeans (ones that everyone's familiar with but cant afford) a pair of stiletto sandals, and a blouse that say " I'm here and I'm Fabulous". Whatever you decide to wear, wear it well and with confident.

Try to have fun both mother and child. Dads, am coming to you soon.
